Winter—We’re Still
Deep In It
It doesn’t matter if you’re on one coast or the other, or smack dab in the middle—it’s still winter in Canada. We’ve had Arctic outflows, atmospheric rivers and bone chilling temperature lows.
With heaters on full blast this is a good time to check the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
- Check on the caulk and weather-stripping. With some extremes between the + & the – be sure the doors and windows are still doing their job and there hasn’t been any damage.
- This is also a good time to check your roof and eves for any ice dams or damage. Tip: consider hiring a professional to do this job. They have the equipment, and the expertise.
- Have a storm readiness plan in place for severe weather. Maintain an emergency pack with a battery-powered flashlight, a radio, tools for emergency repair, ready-to-eat food, a first aid kit, blankets, and extra clothing.
- If you’re travelling, then make sure your vehicle has the right tires for road conditions. Have an emergency kit in your car. At the very least: items to stay warm such as extra hats, coats, mittens, and blankets if you have to stay in the car while help arrives.
If the weather isn’t agreeable, then stay inside. Winter will turn to Spring before you know it!
