Shine Bright, Save Energy

Holiday lights are a beloved tradition, but they don’t have to come with a hefty electricity bill! Here are some easy, energy-efcient ways to brighten your home while keeping energy use in check:

Switch to LED lights. LEDs are the most energy-efficient option, using up to 80% less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs. They last longer, too, making them the perfect choice for decking your halls without the extra cost.

Use timers or smart plugs. Avoid leaving lights on all night by using timers or smart plugs. Set your lights to turn off automatically at a designated time, so they only shine when you want them to, saving energy and reducing your carbon footprint.

String lights with solar power. For outdoor decorations, try solar-powered lights. These harness the power of the sun to light up your yard and garden without using any electricity, making them both eco-friendly and budget-conscious.

Opt for battery-operated LED lights. Battery- operated lights are great for small indoor displays and can be placed anywhere without worrying about outlets. Choose energy-efficient LED battery lights for a festive glow that doesn’t cost a thing to run.

Go for shorter light displays. Consider scaling back on the length of your light displays. Instead of wrapping entire trees or large areas, use fewer strands of lights and focus on key areas, like your porch or window displays, to create a festive effect without overloading on energy.

The Stories Behind Your Favorite Winter Plants

Winter is a great time to decorate with festive plants—many of which have interesting histories. Here’s a peek behind a few seasonal favorites:

Poinsettias: The bright red poinsettia is a symbol of Christmas, but its origins date back to Mexico. Legend says that a poor girl, unable to afford a gift for the Christ child, gave a bouquet of weeds that bloomed into beautiful red flowers—now known as “Flor de Nochebuena,” or Christmas Eve Flower.

Holly: This classic winter plant has long been associated with protection. In ancient times, people believed holly could ward off evil spirits. Its vibrant red berries and spiky leaves became a popular symbol of winter celebration and good fortune.

Amaryllis: The bold and striking amaryllis is known for its large, trumpet-shaped blooms. In Greek mythology, the flower symbolizes pride, strength, and determination, making it a perfect addition to the holiday season.

Mistletoe: Mistletoe has a rich history in both Norse mythology and Druid traditions. The plant was believed to hold magical powers, and kissing under it was thought to bring good luck and peace.

Winter Fruits You’re Probably Not Eating (But Should)

When you think of winter fruits, chances are you’re picturing apples and citrus—but there are plenty of other delicious fruits in season that often go overlooked. Here are a few you might want to add to your winter menu:

Persimmons: These vibrant orange fruits are sweet and honey-like when ripe, with a texture similar to a soft tomato. They’re perfect in salads, baked goods, or just eaten on their own.

Blood oranges: With their striking red fresh and tangy, slightly floral flavor, blood oranges are a beautiful addition to winter dishes. Use them in salads, salsas, or make a refreshing juice.

Quinces: Often overlooked, quinces have a tart, fragrant flavor that softens when cooked. They’re fantastic in jams, jellies, or roasted alongside winter vegetables for a savory-sweet dish. Pomegranates: These jewel-like seeds are packed with antioxidants and add a burst of colour and sweetness to winter salads, smoothies, and desserts.

Kiwis: While often associated with warmer months, kiwis are actually in season through the winter. Their tangy-sweet flavor is great for fruit salads or as a topping for yogurt and cereal.
