Heating Bill Shortcuts

We are in the grip of winter and that always means that the
heating bills can be expected to rise - it's a fact of being
Canadian. Here are four things you can do around the home to
ensure you're not paying ‘through the roof' for heating.

  1. Make sure that your attic has a proper amount of insulation. Your home's attic can be one of the biggest losses of heat in the home. Ensure that your attic is properly sealed with a vapour barrier and properly ventilated so built up moisture can
    escape.
  2. Have the filter on your furnace changed regularly. A clean
filter is going to ensure that your furnace is running
    at peak performance.
  3. If bathrooms or kitchens have separate exhaust fans -
make sure to turn them off when you're done with
them. If the fans are left on, they will suck heated
    air out of the house.
  4. If you can lower the thermostat by even a degree
you will save around 3% on your energy bill. If you
can turn down the thermostat at night or when you
leave the house, you won't be spending to heat the
house unnecessarily. One way to help do this is to
    install a programmable thermostat.

There are many ways to help cut down on the rising
cost of heating. We hope these tips will help you.

Save Every Day

Eating healthy can be managed within a healthy monthly budget - you don't have to break the bank. The keys are: educate yourself and take your time when you're grocery shopping. There are plenty of ways to make sure that your pantry is full of wholesome foods without compromising your monthly food budget.

Snacking the Smart Way
Crunching snacks, like carrots or snow peas, are far more nutritious than potato chips. According to a US Dept. of Agriculture study, they are less costly portion for portion as well. When it comes to snacking, always look for an alternative:

Sweet Treats:
Instead of chocolate try raisins or other dried fruit.

Dairy:
Yogurt is usually less than processed cheese. Check next time you're shopping.

Drinks:
Sodas are so easy and convenient, but try home-brewed iced teas.

Desserts:
Processed desserts like pastries and donuts are less healthy and more costly. Try healthy granola bars, but keep in mind to check the sugar content.

There are many ways to get your family the nutrients they require within your household budget. Next time you're grocery shopping leave yourself enough time to do some investigating. Consider the different costs, per volume, of protein and grains.

A little bit goes a long way, and the monthly grocery bill is one area that families can really take control of.
